When I was studying to be a Special Education teacher, I had a yearning to learn a trade, so I finished my degree and the year I graduated I was sitting in a new classroom learning to become a Florist, which I fell in love with completely.
Flowers had always held a special place in my heart. When I was a child my Mother had four rose bushes that were just outside my bedroom window, I remember standing on my bed, so I could look out the window and look down at the beautiful blooms in the summer. Many years later, I would have my own daughter and call her Rose.
So it is no surprise that the name of my business contains this beautiful word but I needed another word to represent the other things (homewares, soaps, little gifts, cards and jewellery) I was doing with my store, so trinkets it was, which felt just right.
On Valentine’s Day 2005, it came the day to pick up the keys to my shop, I could not believe the date - it was just too perfect! Here I spent two glorious years before beginning to crave more human contact, deciding I would like to pursue work with a corporation. So I secured full time employment and opened my business on the weekends! The day came when I decided to close the shop doors to Trinkets & Roses but tucked my dream firmly away in my heart.
The inevitable day came, when the urge returned to refocus my energies solely on Trinkets & Roses. I was sitting in a local café and looked behind me where there was a stand of Avant card postcards, I was drawn to a french-inspired illustration on one of them, picked it up and it said, “Do you make things?”, I said to myself, “yes, I do!”. So started my journey with In.cube8r, a store in Brisbane’s Valley, where I began to breath life back into my dream. I stayed on in this store for 9 months and thereafter launched into selling at my local markets.
I have taken the skills I learnt as a Florist and applied them to my jewellery techniques. I have such a love of pretty things (as do my customers); flowers are a constant source of inspiration as is the sea, the ballet, beautiful old architecture, textiles and the human soul.
When I had my shop, I would make jewellery and watched this part of my business grow just like the flower side. 'Trinkets' over the years has taken on just one meaning - my jewellery; and 'roses' - the floristry...Trinkets & Roses.
I invite you to have your events styled with my flowers and if so inclined, book a class and learn about floristry!
Best wishes always,
